LAHORE: Punjab Law Minister, Rana Sanaullah Friday advised Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan to give up the role of an angry man and focus on the uplift of the country, Geo News reported.

Talking to media outside the Punjab assembly, Rana Sanaullah said that by-elections were fair and transparent and added that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) accepts the results.

He said that had PML-N not repeatedly changed the award of ticket for contest in Islamabad, Tsunami would not have succeeded, while in Dera Ghazi Khan both the sons of PML-Nís leader Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa contested for the same seat, which resulted in the defeat. Besides, party ticket should have been given to some party worker in Rajanpur, he said

Rana Sanaullah said that Awami National Party (ANP) Ghulam Ahmad Bilourís victory was a slap on the face of PTI adding the decisions of the people of Mianwali and Peshawar was in reaction to Imranís attitude. He further said that if he (Imran) didnít change his attitude, he would suffer further losses.

    - Pashtuns have shown that they have no blind allegiance to any party or particular ideology be it fundamentalism, Pashtun nationalism (different from pride in Pashtun ethnicity and culture) and even Pakistani nationalism.

    - They rejected the fundamentalist MMA in 2008 when they voted in the nationalists of the ANP.

    - They then rejected the nationalists of the ANP when they voted in the pro-Pakistan, Punjab-based PTI.

    - They have now recently shown their rejection of the PTI in favour of nationalists.

The nationalists, ANP (PMAP also supported the ANP in this recent electoral victory) have been around in different forms for almost a century and regardless of electoral ups and downs are a force in Pashtun society, but not one which can count upon blind and unswerving loyalty. They must work for Pashtun votes which is of course a healthy phenomenon.

There are a number of different axes in the Pashtun identity, Islam, Pashtun ethnicity and Pakistani nationalism.

The average Pashtun in Peshawar will say that he is:

    1. Muslim first
    2. Pakistani second
    3. Pashtun third

In Quetta it is more likely to be.

    1. Muslim first
    2. Pashtun second
    3. Pakistan third

However his loyalty to Islam does not make him a fan of extremists such as the TTP and as for the MMA/JUI he will stop voting for him if he cannot deliver good governance.

His loyalty to Pakistan is not unlimited and though the majority of Pashtuns want Pakistan to be successful and to have a good life for themselves and their families, to have jobs, good education, healthcare, and living facilities if Pakistan fails and is clear that it is not workable he will abandon Pakistani nationalism. This is why Pashtun nationalism has been rising in the past decade due to the slow collapse of the Pakistani state.

The Pashtun will always be a Pashtun and a proud Pashtun, however that does not necesarrily mean he will become an ANP-style nationalist, but if the fundamentalists (JUI) and Pakistani nationalists (PTI) cannot deliver he will show his anger with them by voting for the ethnic nationalists, the ANP.

The Pashtun is a rebellious and fiery individual not beholden to slavery and servitude. He is not like the Punjabi who will always vote PML-N or the Sindhi who will always vote PPP, but in fact the Pashtun is a proud man whose vote must be won, must be earned, and will quickly be withdrawn if he is not pleased.
