Malakand: delay in reconstruction

(12 hours ago) TodayTHERE is no denying the fact that the recent wave of violence, terror and militancy has caused a lot of losses and damage to the whole infrastructure of Malakand division.

Government assets and school buildings are no exception. Even public parks and places were not spared: they were ruined and damaged by miscreants.

But another trouble is bothering the already suffering people: the disastrous floods which caused havoc in the entire region.

As a result, not only huge public properties have been destroyed but a large number of innocent people have also fallen prey at the hands of the natural calamity. And what is aggravating is that the communication system of the whole division, including Swat, Malakand, Shangla, Dir and Buner districts, was also destroyed by torrential rains, floods and landslides.

Right from Kalam to Bahrain and Madayan, the entire network of roads has been damaged by rainwater and floods.

Dozens of bridges and link roads have also been washed away.

Although the government promised to restore and renovate all damage done by floods, but most of the promises have yet to
be fulfilled.

It may be mentioned here that the army has taken some alternative measures to restore the old communication system. They also built some bridges. But much more needs to be done.

The government, non-governmental organisations and other national and international humanitarian and donor organisations are requested to come forward and speed up the rehabilitation work to provide the much needed succour to the people. Besides, school and educational institutions destroyed by miscreants and natural calamities need to be rebuilt in the best interest of the people.
