Body functions are controlled by 2 parallel but interdependent systems. One is nervous system, where messages are transmitted by fibers and other endocrine system, where a number of glands make and secret hormone which circulate in blood stream and affect body functions.
There are several glands, like pituitary gland (the King gland), thyroid, pancreas, adrenal beside ovaries and testes.
Thyroid gland is placed in front of neck, normally size of tip of small finger. It makes and store very important hormone called thyroxin (thyroid hormone).
There are many reason this gland can go under active (Hypothyroidism).In some areas it because of deficiency of Iodine in soil. Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. Other reasons can be disease of thyroid gland itself or disease of pituitary gland which control all other glands in body.
If thyroid gland is under active during pregnancy or in child early age, it can cause sever mental retardation(called cretinism)
SO IODINE IS IMPORTANT FOR NORAML FUNCTIONING BRAIN.

Wrora you know when the Iodine salt was introduced before this Polio campaigne, what Mullah would say dont take this salt because its a western conspiracy to make our males impotent so they can not produce more childern. I remember so many Mullahs advocating this propaganda, even people wouldn't buy this salt in village shops, so we requested some of the local companies not to put that Iodine logo or mark on the salt bags.
May Allah guide these fanatics or get us rid of them.
