Epilepsy (meergy) is quite prevalent condition. In human brain messages are transmitted as electrical activity and some time some area of brain for various reason start to have more than normal electrical activity and this cause seizure(When seizure(Fits) are recurrent ,its called Epilepsy).
The way these abnormal electrical activities are translated into physical manifestation depend on the area in brain where this abnormal activity is going on. So, if it is in area which control movements, person will get abnormal physical movements. If it involve area of smell, thoughts they will have abnormal experience accordingly.
Epilepsy is broadly speaking divided into 2 main groups.
1: generalized Epilepsy, in which person loose consciousness.
2: Focal Epilepsy, in which person remain alert.
There are different reasons for epilepsy. If it stats in later life i.e after age of 40 one should look for underlying brain tumors.
Pregnant ladies who are on medication can have babies with birth defects, so need frequent monitoring.
Small children i.e less than 5 years old many time get fits if they get high temperature, these are called febrile convulsions and usually children grow out of it. The way to prevent it is to prevent kids having high temperature by early treatment of any infective illness.
