The Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and the Pakhtoon Khawa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai have declared that Pakistan could not survive if incidents like that of May 12 were repeated.
“President Gen Pervez Musharraf and the Sindh government should tender apologies for the killings of innocent people on May 12 as both the federal and Sindh governments were responsible for the carnage,” they said.
They said this while addressing a gathering of representatives of different Pakhtoon bodies and organisations late on Sunday.
The two leaders had arrived in the city to offer condolence to the May 12 victims’ families and inquire about the health of the injured ones. Asfandayar Wali also gave Rs100,000 each to ten victims and Rs25,000 each to many injured as compensation from the party fund.
The ANP chief said that everybody could judge the situation on May 12 through the footage of different TV channels as to who were involved in the killings. He said that the president and the Sindh government should inform the people of what steps they had taken to control the situation on that day.
He said two days before the arrival of the Chief Justice of Pakistan to Karachi, the Sindh government had declared emergency in the city hospitals and it was well aware of ensuing situation.
The ANP leader said that on May 12 the whole world was watching the Karachi situation on TV channels but neither the president nor the prime minister bothered to ask the IGP and Home Secretary to get them updated about the situation.
Asfandyar said Gen Musharraf’s government can not run the affairs of the state without satisfying and taking into confidence the Pakhtoons vis-a-vis the May 12 incidents.
Mehmood Achakzai alleged that Gen Musharraf was responsible for the killings of Pakhtoons living in Karachi. He said that four million Pakhtoons were living in Karachi and the modus operandi adopted by the terrorists on May 12 to kill Pukhtoons was like that of Hitler who used to kill his opponents through his fascist supporters.
The provincial chief of the ANP Shahi Syed and others also spoke on the occasion
