people i want to know whether the people who claim pashtun ancestory are actually pashtun?? im talking about the ones who are dispersed in india and pakistani punjab and other areas. i know pashtun is 1 who follows pashtunwali and speaks pashto, im talking about the actual ethnic blood. because some people are telling me that blood gets diluted if you marry into others. and others tell me that as long as its from the paternal lineage you are pashtun whether you look like one of not so im getting quite confused here. and the matter of time im talking about is over centuries.

Not very sure about ancestory because ancestory is something else. But we are talking about the ethnicity or the element of ownness, as so many people say that we are actually Pukhtuns but settled in Punjab etc.
So as per my opinion the important aspects which matters are:-
a. Blood
b. Pukhtunwali
c. Language
d. Ownness

So even if some one is not Pukhtun by blood but if he follows Pukhtunwali and residing amongst Pukhtun for last about 800 years, he can be termed as Pukhtun. As we have many hindko brothers in Pekhawar.

im talking about this because in fact my family descended from a waziri man from mianwali who went to punjab for work and married punjabi wives. and im just wondering because if im pashtun then i will be one specifically and inf im punjabi then il be that. im just confused at the moment. by the way what is ownness?????

i am also wondering about the features because we have features that some punjabies dont have and some pashtuns have, and i was told not to link these qualities with pashtuns, but i need to understand and i need someone good and experienced to help me out on this. as i traced the tribe of my ancestor which was thanks to you guys which i really appreciate:). i think im in the same position as the "pathan" of punjab and india but they descended from rohilas and the ghilzai and their branches.

Omar Khan I dont understand your confusion. If your ancestors are Pukhtuns so you are. Ancestry follow paternal relations and not maternal.
If we consider maternal ancestry then most of the Pukhtun tribes are the descendants of Hazrat Khalid Bin Waleed.
You are a pure breed of Pukhtun by all definitions. Just see your name and your tribe. I don’t know what is the doubt.
What about your Pukhto, are you working on that?
By the way speaking Pukhto is not must to be a Pukhtun but it is just important because when you say I am a Pukhtun then a Pukhtun will talk to you in Pukhto.
However, may be SAK or DM may further help you.

well my whole family came from the paternal definition not maternal and its been like this for 5 centuries i never had any punjabi ancestors. but what im confused about is that the blood gets halved everytime if you marry a punjabi person and ur pashtun and then my blood must be heavily diluted now and people even say i look punjabi so thats why. i would learn pashto if i know im pashtun definatly no doubt. i put khan in my name because i mean khan as in descendent of pashtun so i have to put that.

You cant do any thing with your blood even if it is diluted. But if you ask anyone, he will term you to be a Pukhtun because of your ancestry. In fact that is not something alarming. The more alarming thing would be if you dont own to be a Pukhtun. As we have in many cases in Kashmir and Multan, where Pure Pukhtuns like Sudhans and Haqwanis who are Pukhtuns by every definition but they are more loyal to Kashmiris and Punjabis respectively than Pukhtuns. So please dont think much, if your forefather has migrated to Punjab and married here, that wont change our identity of Pukhtun.

ok thanks, so that bit of my pashtun blood makes me pashtun and the majority punjabi blood doesnt matter?? i am already with pashtuns more than punjabies, pashtun is number one priority after islam. i asked other people and they say because your ancestor and his descendents married punjabi wives and had children from them, that makes me a punjabi and im not pashtun any more so i dont know.

OMar Khana.....Ur ancestors from paternal side are all Pakhtuns..so that side is killed for good. U are a Pakhtun by all definitions. Secondly you have the pride of claiming your ancestory.....that is the best thing that can happen to anyone..to get back to his roots. So relax...enjoy ur newfound origionality and study well. We need young ones like you who can rediscover themselves and then prod on those among us who are Pakhtuns speak the lingo and breath the air of Pukhrunkhwa but still back the Punjabi...Good luck.
